Last local carnation grower: “We go for exclusive and we love the challenge”

Those who remained….. Coos Buis and his company Mediaverdi. However, the fourth generation you can already find in the greenhouse. Father Coos, mother Aaltje, son Johan with his wife Bianca are working daily with lots of fun and success in the spotless greenhouse. The fifth generation in the person of Jeroen is still in high school and has already indicated to go for the business.
The company was formed in 1900 when great-grandfather Jacob Oor began to cultivate lilacs and chrysanthemums. In 1935 he started with the first cut carnations in the company and in 1958 grandfather Jan Buis took over the company from his father.  He went to specialize in the production of large-flowered lilac and carnations. In 1965 he stopped lilacs. The carnations stayed and till today this product is still one of the pillars of the company.

In 1971 father Coos took over the company and renamed it Mediaverdi.  Now you will ask: “What does that stand for? “It refers to DIAnthus, and VERDI comes from the word deserved. So with carnations we earned our money. We say in Dutch “Met dianthus verdiend” .
Johan is proud to announce that they use in all business processes in the company their own created ‘green electricity’ by placing 172 solar panels.
From 1st of May the carnations are planted in the 3000 square meter greenhouses and we harvest from early August about thirty different species. Every year, we grow plenty of novelties. Johan is responsible for the selection, cultivation and marketing and he has close contact with domestic and foreign breeders.

The Buis Family cultivates the carnation as a niche product, not as an ordinary product. In general the Dutch grower goes for safe colors, that’s not how we work, we go more for the exclusive with a challenge to go for the best. Some of the large, well-known species, now widely available in the market, began their career at Mediaverdi.
